We all tell stories to make sense of our lives, but our stories are often based on outdated thoughts and beliefs about ourselves. Sometimes we tell the stories we have inherited from others but believe to be our true narrative. And if unchallenged, these stories stick and then keep us stuck.
'It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves' William Shakespeare
My story:
As the second of four children, our family home was noisy, full of music and drama, with an emphasis on education. Having siblings close in age was wonderful in many ways - fun and imaginative - but tricky in others. My brother and sisters excelled at maths and science, were sporty and competitive. I loved music, wrote torturous poetry and tried to keep the peace. At all times. To my younger self my siblings seemed so sure, so confident, and in contrast I felt lacking. Not enough. And I masked all my insecurities with humour and a ready smile. Pursuing the arts, I studied English and Music at University and following a post-graduate course in piano at music college fell into teaching. And stayed there.
Teaching is an incredible privilege, inspiring children to be the best versions of themselves. And young children are brilliant at that. They love playing, challenging themselves, navigating their way around problems in creative ways. But, as a teacher, many questions kept surfacing:
Where along the way does creeping doubt set in and then stay?
What impact does this have on our future choices, our relationships with others and how we live our lives?
When do we start to believe our 'narrative' and lock into unhelpful paradigms?
Where as adults can we find inspiration to unlock our creativity, widen our lens and challenge the path we're taking?
And there, the seed of an idea to marry coaching with creativity, was sown.
And so began my training as a Transformational Coach and the birth of ‘The Coaching Creative’.
And how transformational the journey has been. I've peeled back the layers, unlocking the beliefs that held me back and kept me hostage. I've challenged the 40 year old narrative that made sense to a young child, but didn't serve me as an adult. And having experienced the transformative power of coaching, I feel so privileged to work with clients to unlock their potential and change their trajectory.
My clients' stories:
I have coached teenagers, young adults, teachers, musicians, medics, artists, stay at home parents, business owners….
Their stories are all different, but the themes they present with are often similar. Do any of these resonate with you?
You would you love to change aspects of your life.
You find relationships, either personal or in the workplace, challenging.
You’re in a job that pays the mortgage and bills, but feels unauthentic.
You have a brilliant creative idea, but now want to move it to the next level.
You are at a crossroads in your life and are intrigued to explore the road less travelled.
You’re motivated to move your ideas forward, but would welcome being accompanied on your journey, having someone in your corner to challenge and inspire you.
You can’t shake the nagging feeling that you’re not living your authentic life, the one that makes your soul sing.
One thing is for certain: you’re ready to embrace change.
'The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.'
Carl Gustav Jung
